I’ve mistreated this blog horribly this year. We haven’t done a lot in real life, so there hasn’t been much material there. I posted the zoo trip and wrote about my peaches when those opportunities presented themselves. Old What’s Her Face and I have been working opposing days for quite a while, so we aren’t together to do much lately.
As far as being an author, I worked on a few things. I picked through my critiques and made quite a few adjustments to the last chapter I shared. I feel good about the results.
I finished reading a book and posted the review for it. I’m considering diving into something else tomorrow. I have a hankering for some science fiction and have two different books in mind.
I also went ahead and started a new project. Authors write. That’s what we do, and it’s what I enjoy the most. I’m calling this a side project. It almost demands to be a trilogy. Lessons learned from Lanternfish indicate that I should finish the whole thing before trying to publish it. This means it could be my side project for a few years.
There is a small struggle in that I want two different groups to come together somewhere around chapter three. The first one consists of a pair of disabled veterans and their unique perspective. I like the lady with the prosthetic tentacle and the space chimp. I want to gripe about the treatment of veterans and a bit of prejudice for the space chimp. He’s destined to be one of the bigger personalities in this found-family adventure.
I hacked some things out for them, but it only came to three pages. That isn’t enough for a chapter, so I need to give them more thought. I’m sure I could use more setting and that will help. Can’t hurt in chapter one to have more setting.
I think the second group will take me more words to get them on the page. (There are twenty-eight of them, or three depending upon how you count the clones.) Rather than jump ahead, I’ll dwell on the first pair and see what I can come up with.
This is the beauty of being ahead of schedule. I have time to dabble with this stuff until it makes me happy. Hopefully, it will make someone else happy, too… eventually.
Tomorrow, I will dedicate a bit of time to Lanternfish. I need to keep that moving ahead for 2021 publication.
I also have a loose plan for some October promo, but am waiting for a small amount of data to start creating that. There are a couple of months, so it will happen whenever it does.
There you have it. Life in the fast lane for an author. Say hello in the comments. Life gets stale when left to my own devices.
Funny how even when nothing is blog post worthy, we’re still busy. Hope you have a fun weekend.

It’s kind of boring, but so is regular life. I updated because I need to. These new character will be fun, and can occupy my time for a couple of years.

Always nice to spend years with characters.

I really should write another stand alone, but this is where my brain is these days. I have multiple stories planned for The Hat, and this thing with no title.

I’m sure your muse will gift you a stand alone one day. Never can tell with them.

I have a couple of them partially mapped out. It’s just a matter of what I’m feeling at the time. I can’t seem to predict the market, so I make myself happy.

That market is brutal and I think I’ve just given up trying. I’ll write the stories in the order I have them and let the universe decide if I’m going to get anywhere. Seems to be harder and harder to even get to the publish stage now.

I considered quitting earlier this year. I enjoy writing and could still do that, but then what do I do with them? There are still people who enjoy my stories, so here I am.

I think of quitting once a month. Doesn’t even feel like there are people who enjoy my stories. Found out that a few people who would normally review my stuff were banned years ago on Amazon too. So, it’s been a rough summer.

I’ve come across a few of those, too. They actually read the books so I don’t understand, but it’s Amazon’s world. We just play in it.

From what I can tell, the people were reported as family or close friend. It might have been done by another author who wanted to hurt me because it was a bunch of people who bought my books upon release and reviewed within a month.

Got it. Still seems wrong, but what do I know. If they bought them, and read them, I think it should be allowed.

Same here. It’s definitely wrong because most indie authors will have family support them first. It effectively eliminates a newcomer’s first line of readers. Even if you ban family, I think it goes too far by banning friends because that’s a broad term.

Since the sci-fi is a side project, do you have two other projects planned for a year? You usually publish two a year, don’t you? I’m still excited about the 3rd Lanternfish. I hardly read any sci-fi. It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

I have been able to publish three per year over the last couple. Don’t know that it’s required, and two is more leisurely. I have Lanternfish done, and another Hat story finished. There are multiple Hat stories in various plotting stages, so they could balance the SF thing.

Hello. I think it is okay to put your energy into your books.

There isn’t a lot more to do right now. Might as well enjoy what I have available.

Our world is like our blogs …. plodding along. But we get there one word at a time 😊

Sounds like you’ve been busy, even if it doesn’t look like much when you put it together in a blog post.
Things are just plodding along here too. Not much writing happening, but there’s progress with production of the audio version of one of the poetry books I released a couple of months ago (I’ll need to give the narrator for the other one a slight nudge if I don’t see anything from her soon). I’m involved in two roleplaying games, plus I now attend both a weekly Zoom book club and a monthly Zoom crafternoon. Other than that I’ve just been trying to read when I can, arguing with my asthma nurse about whether irritating an allergy is worth a potential minor reduction in how often I’ll need to take my asthma inhalers, and wondering how exactly we’re in August already.

Yeah. It isn’t all earth shattering news lately. I’ve been productive, but it’s hard to show that to everyone. Like today, I’ll be editing and that’s boring.

The fast lane has been diverted from my area, and in a way I’m glad, as I don’t think I could keep up with it just yet… I’m happy being the tortoise for a while anyway…

I think we all feel that our lives have slowed down a lot over the past 18 months, Craig. We are going away for a long weekend on 20 August and I can’t wait. We are going to see the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Mankind.

That sounds like so much fun. I stayed home for my vacation. I’d like to go somewhere if it would ever cool down.

Just one. I based upon some actual research and a prototype I saw. Of course, my fictional one works a bit better.

Oh, I’d say you’ve been plenty busy, Craig. I had to laugh at the prosthetic tentacles. Your imagination is amazing! I look forward to the final Lanternfish. I’ve enjoyed the entire journey so far. Have a great weekend!

Worked on edits until my daughter called. That kind of killed my momentum, but it’s all good.

I’ve got to agree with Jan. You’ve been plenty busy. It seems that way, anyway. Though I get what you’re saying. Keep on keepin’ on. 🙂 NO quitting for you just yet, please.

I’ll keep producing things. Beyond that, and any timetable, who knows.

I think it’s fun. I’m still getting to know these characters and yet, today doesn’t seem like the day for it.

The prosthetic tentacle sounds… interesting? Anyway, I think it’s a sign that you’re really getting your skills down, that your brain can feed you more complex and challenging ideas.
As for waiting to publish them all, I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. Maybe get two done, and then start publishing? That way you have urgency to complete the following book. If it’s all just “someday” then it might not be a top priority. And what if you come with another great idea that prevents you finishing these?
Just my thoughts, anyway.

I’m a proven finisher. I have time to decide how to unfold everything. I only have about five pages so far.
