New words and Asian pears

My pear is in full bloom. The whole thing is quite pretty right now. I got a couple of good snaps, but the honeybee pushed one over the top as new wallpaper. Not gonna lie, I had a hard time giving up those maple leaves, but it’s time.

All the Bradford pears in the neighborhood are also blooming, and they pollinate mine. I’ll be thinning pears before much longer.

I dedicated myself to Footsteps of Infinity today. Added 2000 new words, and actually like them. It’s been a chapter since the big discovery, and a lot of this is about assembling their documentary.

I know everything that has to happen to wrap this up, but it’s going to take a couple of weeks to get it all to flow right.

One part I enjoyed was listening to another segment of Night Bump Radio. I’m having fun with this, because in The Hat Series I have to keep it all about cryptids, supernatural things, and ghosts.

In this story, callers can talk about aliens, and that makes me happy. Today, I wove in a caller who says he got probed, lost a bunch of time, and has a suffering friend because of it all.

This led me to Havana Syndrome, which gives Cody a sound reference to clear up for readers. He’s my wannabe Foley artist. He also makes a reference to The Brown Note.

Of course, the caller is half a bubble off plumb. He has problems for ordering Bud Light in front of all his friends. Who could blame the poor guy. He lost time and got probed… maybe. The whole thing is gloriously stupid.

The original idea for Night Bump Radio is a real call-in show we used to listen to in my younger years. It was called something similar to Shore To Shore. If you know, you know. The guy was from Nevada and so am I.

i have a couple of things I need to do, but have a hunch I’ll be adding new words to this baby. I’m irresponsible like that.

Things are looking up

I got a slow start on purpose this morning. That doesn’t mean my day started late. Frankie the bulldog let me know she needed breakfast about 5:30.

I took my time with coffee, pets, reading blogs. Then I went on a tangent to find a character on Pinterest. I saved several punk-type girls into a file I have for female character studies. Once I had a general idea in mind I started writing.

I created the girl from the college computer lab. She helped my supporting character with a tracking device, and with planting it on the bad guys. I’m really enjoying this character, because she’s kind of a bad ass herself.

Her back story is that she’s from Hong Kong and is studying to design her own computers. Part of that involves deconstruction and reverse engineering, which brings her neatly into my plot. I gave her a punkish vibe that seems to work well. Her hair is buzzed on one side, then pushed to the other in a spiral perm that’s been died cherry red. She has the attitude to go with it, too. As I weaved her into the story, I can see even more use for her character later on.

This might be similar to what I have in mind. I’ll bleed her backstory in later. Today was all about action.

I like the mix of her bad assed, Vespa riding self, against good boy Cody who still lives with his mother. I think I can have some fun there.

You guys know I love my Easter Eggs, so I’m including a big one here as part of the scenery. It involves a certain coast to coast broadcast that appears in multiple other stories of mine. This time Pete Rogers is taking calls about extra-terrestrials and Intelligence Officers who become whistle blowers. Nothing like being on the cutting edge of what’s happening out there.

All told, it came to over 2500 words today and this tale is starting to pick up steam.

I need to get Percy the Space Chimp to the same place. Right now, I have this bunch rocketing through space, and they need to get to a bigger adventure. There is plenty of personal growth and drama aboard the ship, but I need to check the recipe if you know what I mean. I might have too much in one place that’s better spread around.

Either way, I’m excited about the story with Jenny and Cody. I called the new character DEFRAG, but Cody needs to put in some effort before he learns her true name. I have it in mind that she’s a nice person, but people need to earn her trust.

Finally more productive and on par with what I expect of myself. I hope all of you are doing what you want this weekend, and are happy with your results.

Some book love

Will O’ the Wisp got some book love recently. I love the idea that these older stories still attract readers from time to time. Pete from this book makes occasional appearances in The Hat series, and I have plans to have Patty show up as well.

Will O’ the Wisp

by C.S. Boyack

“Will O’ the Wisp” is a YA paranormal tale that focuses on fifteen-year-old Patty Hall. The Hall family seems to have been cursed, and Patty is determined to find out why. I love that this story is set in the 1970s. The high school dance and well-placed details of that era brought back some memories. The strained relationship between Patty and her mother is realistic, and Patty’s rebellious side is portrayed nicely, especially with wearing her leg braces. That side of her not only showed her determination, but her inner strength that’s needed to overcome evil. There were some truly terrifying parts, but there was also friendship, trust, and family. I could relate to Patty’s position that no one, other than her two friends, would believe her. If you like a teen protagonist with some horror and a strong female character, this book is for you. Five-Stars! Check out the entire post here.
