Something Wicked presents A Cold Tomorrow

I host a lot of authors here. It’s something I enjoy, and it’s occasionally paid off when I need a place to promote one of my new stories. It’s even more enjoyable when it’s one of my friends. Mae Clair and I go way back, and we’re both members of Story Empire.

The Something Wicked tour involves all of the Story Empire crowd taking our show on the road and spreading the word about our personal work. I hope you’ll make Mae feel welcome and check out:

The Hopkinsville Goblins

Thanks for hosting me today, Craig! It’s fun to be here with your readers kicking off my fourth stop of Story Empire’s Something Wicked Blog Tour.

October is a fun time that brings plenty of shivers as we draw closer to Halloween, our mind naturally drawn to ghosts, ghouls, and goblins. But not all goblins are of the supernatural variety.

On a summer night in August of 1955, Billy Ray Taylor, a native of Pennsylvania was visiting his friend, Lucky Sutton of Kentucky. Lucky lived on a farm tucked between the towns of Kelly and Hopkinsville, a rural homestead that lacked electricity and running water. At some point during the evening, Billy hiked outside to get a drink of water from the well. In the process he glimpsed a shining object which descended from the sky and landed in a gully a quarter mile away.

When Billy returned to the homestead, he excitedly shared his tale, but the Sutton family laughed off the story. Not long afterward, the family dog broke into a crazy raucous before vanishing under the porch where it remained in hiding until the next day. Armed with rifles, Billy and Lucky headed outdoors to investigate. In the front yard, they encountered a bizarre creature with “large eyes, a long thin mouth, large ears, thin short legs, and hands ending in claws.” The being was unlike any they had ever seen before, short in stature, gremlin-like in appearance.

Both men unloaded their guns. They later insisted they couldn’t have missed their target at such close range, but the creature slipped away, vanishing into the surrounding woods. Billy and Lucky returned to the house, where they barricaded themselves inside.

In a short while, more creatures appeared. They gaped through the windows and grappled at the screens, trying to gain access to the house. The men unloaded ammo repeatedly. It took several hours before family members were able to escape and seek help from the sheriff’s department.

When they arrived at the Sutton farm, the sheriff and his men found no evidence of the goblin-like creatures but couldn’t deny there were holes blown through the walls and screens where bullets had penetrated. All officers reported the Suttons were sober and seemed genuinely terrified by something. They eventually left the farm around 2:15 in the morning.

Almost immediately, the goblin-like creatures descended again, peeking in windows and trying to gain entry. The strange events finally came to a halt shortly before dawn. At a loss for explanation, not knowing what else to do, the sheriff summoned the Air Force.

The story made headline news, prompting many to speculate the Suttons had fabricated a hoax. But they gained nothing from the publicity, and neighbors collaborated their reports of “lights in the sky.” All of the adults who witnessed the event−Billy and Lucky among them−gave the exact same account of events when questioned separately. There are even reports of a highway trooper citing “meteor-like objects” flying overhead around 11PM that night. Additionally, there is mention of “an odd luminous patch along a fence where one of the beings had been shot, and, in the woods beyond, a green light whose source could not be determined.”

Years later, each family member remained firm in their story, no evidence of a hoax ever discovered. Interestingly, the U.S. Air Force has denied any involvement, but it has led many to believe the events of August 21, 1955, were those of an authentic UFO encounter.

I’ve always been fascinated by stories of UFOs and extraterrestrial beings. You’ll meet more than one alien in my novel, A Cold Tomorrow, but they are far from the Hopkinsville Goblin variety. I invite you to journey to Point Pleasant, where documented accounts of UFOs, Men in Black, and strange visitors once made national headlines. Although A Cold Tomorrow, is book 2 of my Point Pleasant series, it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

As a sergeant in the sheriff’s office of the famously uncanny Point Pleasant, Officer Ryan Flynn has learned to tolerate reports of puzzling paranormal events. But single mom Katie Lynch appears to be in very real danger—and somehow Ryan’s own brother, Caden, is caught up in the madness, too. Craig here again. I’ve read the entire Point Pleasant series and can vouch highly for it. It would be perfect for your Halloween reading, but holds up well at other times of the year, too. Make our day and use those sharing buttons.

We’d love to hear from you in the comments, too. Do any of you live near Hopkinsville or Point Pleasant?

Side note: Today is my birthday. As my gift, please consider picking up any of the titles on the Something Wicked tour this week. (Doesn’t have to be mine.) I know you’ll enjoy them.

The Goblin Trilogy, on Lisa Burton Radio

You've found Lisa Burton Radio, the show that brings you the characters from books you love. We have a very special guest with us in the studio today. I'm your host, Lisa the robot girl, and my guest today is Haghuf the goblin. “Welcome to the show, Haghuf.”

“I trust your guest status is like ours, that none will attempt harm to me in your dwelling?”

“Of course. My bio tells me that you're hundreds of years old, and can legitimately call yourself a warrior, a scholar, and magician. That seems like a pretty full life. What did it take to draw you above ground, away from your library and apprentice?”

“I came to the surface for the first time in 800 of your years because a human was dancing in a time long after humans had forgotten magic and the power of The Dance. I discovered Count Anton, a magician who had become the ruler of the handful of humans who survived the last cataclysm. I've avoided humans since the goblin wars of old, but we found much to talk about and he respected the need for goblins to remain unknown from most humans.”

“Is this a case of, keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer?”

“Something like that. Anton and I have things in common, but he is still human. Humans have killed goblins whenever they meet and I would not bring danger to my people. We come from the same ancestors and can breed across species, yet they call us ugly and attempt to kill all goblins whenever humans discover we exist. It's better to let the stories fall into old legends and be thought imaginary.”

“You've got to admit there are similarities to the human beliefs in demons. It makes me wonder which came first; goblins from underground that caused them to make up demons, or belief in demons that were easily tagged onto goblins.”

“The Deep Dwellers, like myself, apparently frighten humans because we look very different. As you can see, my skin is green. I have strong ridges on my brow and a strong, square jaw. The bottom fangs upset them too, though I haven't bitten a human… yet. There are many like me. I suspect some were seen in the days when we exchanged younglings with humans, changelings, to strengthen the bloodlines of both.”

“Tell me about it. People are afraid of anything different. I have religious wackos who want to see me destroyed, just because I'm a robot. They're afraid I'll try to take over. Me, one robot girl. I am different in many ways, but I try really hard to fit in.”

“You should be like goblins. We learned to hide and to live underground to avoid humans. Only Those Who Provide come to the surface usually, the goblins who… source food supplies. “

“We could all learn a lot from each other. My library is called The Internet, and I'll bet you'd like it. I can access it at any time with a good wifi connection. Your library probably has things that would benefit us all too. Fear keeps us from sharing things that would help each other.”

“Anton is always pestering me for information about my people. I tell him what he needs to know, but no more. There is power in secrets and the less a human knows of goblin ways, the better. Remember that humans don't live very long. How can I trust future rulers not yet born? Recording information, whether it is in a book or on your Internet, makes that information available to anyone. I keep the books of magic safe. Other information, like how the planet turns and the history of our people is made known through the Storytelling.”

“The Storytelling?”

“It is a goblin custom. We gather. We share food. Whoever wishes to speak goes to the front of the cavern and tells us what they wish. Maybe something of what you call science. Maybe history. Maybe just a story from imagination or a telling of exploits from the surface or other grottos. News of significance. At some point someone will pick up a drum, followed by others, and we begin to dance in cadence with the rhythm of the planet. It becomes ecstatic, magical, and the females choose mates. We have too few young.”

“Haghuf, I really appreciate you taking time to visit with us today, and I wish you well in your attempts to keep the peace.”

“Keeping humans and goblins out of each other's worlds is the only way to keep peace.”

“The sponsor of today's show is The Goblin Trilogy, by Jaq D. Hawkins. If you'd like to know more about Haghuf and Anton, I'll include the links on the website. Now don't forget to use those sharing buttons, I'm sure Haghuf will appreciate it, and you'll appreciate it too when your character appears here.”

A saga spanning three generations in a feudal world governed by magicians.

Will you dare to enter a world of darkness among the goblins to join into The Dance?

Dance of the Goblins

The goblins lived unseen by man for many generations and were forgotten, consigned to legend, but a fluke sighting when a man wanders into the entrance of a forgotten underground transportation system revives an ancient war between the species, originated by misunderstanding and prejudice of a species which appears alien to the superstitious humans.

Demoniac Dance

A young girl running away from an unwanted marriage finds a new life among the mysterious magicians in the land across the river. What she didn’t bargain for is the presence of the goblins who have befriended her benefactors.

Power of the Dance

Khemael is a creature of beauty and grace with a mostly human appearance. His love of stretching his leather-like wings and flying freely in the world of men brings far too much attention to the existence of the goblins. Haghuf knows that the inevitable responsibility will fall to him to destroy Khemael who, in the world of the humans, would be called his grandson.

Worlds of magic await to be discovered in the complete series, The Goblin Trilogy!

My Birthday Gift to You

That’s right, today marks one more orbit around the sun for me. I’ve been hitting it hard on the promotional front, and am about out of paranormal stories to push. Will O’ the Wisp is on an extensive blog tour, but that doesn’t leave much to do around here.

That means I need to stretch a bit to fit this into the Halloween theme. It’s actually an epic fantasy, but it contains lots of things that could be considered monsters. (If you look at them with your peripheral vision.)

Regular followers know I like to mash things up. This is a Greco-Roman fantasy with some of the traditional Germanic characters thrown in too. Elves, dwarves, and goblins are European in nature, so I decided they must have existed further south too.

They are in the mix with cyclops, satyrs, Amazons, and centaurs. In this world, Remus killed Romulus and the Remsians are the power instead of the Romans.

This is the story of Cobby, a Southern Dwarf. He loses his human family in an attack by some people who look suspiciously like Atlanteans. This sends him on a journey to discover his true heritage. He meets other downtrodden races along the way and seems to collect them all. Eventually it becomes a sizeable band.

It’s like Homer included Exodus in some kind of, well, mashup. I think it’s a fun story, and for my birthday it’s absolutely free. One day only. Hope you enjoy it.

Hail Cobby

Lisa Burton Radio, now with Goblins

Welcome to today’s edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa Burton, the robot girl. We have a very special guest with us today, Talla the goblin girl.

Today’s show is sponsored by The Goblin Trilogy, by Jaq D. Hawkins. Our Guest, Talla, appears in these stories. Welcome to the show Talla.

“Um, hello.”

“This story takes place after a geological polar shift. This leaves kind of a mess. What can you tell us about it? Listeners want to know what’s lost, and what’s left.”

“What you call a polar shift, we call the Turning, because the planet turns over. Land masses change and high winds destroy much of what is on the surface. The place above the caverns where I live was a great city of humans, now the buildings they made are all damaged, some reduced to rubble. It is a cleansing process, because the technology the humans used to pollute the Earth is mostly gone. They have become as they once were, using old methods for making what they need as their ancestors did when all humans lived in small villages.”

“My bio says that you are considered a Betweener. Can you tell our listeners what that means?”

“The Betweeners live between the levels… closer to the surface than the Old Ones, but still below the human world. Many of our caverns were once human tunnels, for underground transportation, or old mines. We use whatever we find, like all of our kind.”

“Why would your whole civilization choose to live in obscurity from the rest of the world. I know first hand about human prejudice, but it’s much better than it used to be. Some people would think you are pretty cool and would welcome you with open arms.”

“Most goblins look unlike humans. I look close to human, like elves from your fantasy stories, but your people have always killed goblins because they look like what you call demons. Their faces have ridges to protect their eyes from falling rocks in the deep caverns. Green skin upsets humans, even mine, though it is very light.

“Also it is hard for goblins to live close to humans. Your… way of life and the things your people find important do not make sense to us. You judge others of your own kind by what clothing they wear, what they do with their lives, who they love… we make no judgements, but live our own lives, enjoying what the Earth gives us.”

“So you like to watch humans, and can even magically fool human males. What are you trying to accomplish?”

“Must something always be accomplished? It gives me pleasure to look at pretty human men. That is reason enough. I make myself appear human because human men will treat me as one of their own kind. It is protection, like the dress I wear. The skins that goblins wear in the caverns would not look natural to humans.”

“Oh my God, I love dresses. I have so many with polka dots, cherry prints, and more. Then there are the skirts. Do you have any skirts?”

“We have many human items. We collect them, for when there is need.”

“I have a couple of old pencil skirts I could send you. I’ll bet you’d look really cool in them.”

“A gift then. I can bring you goblin skirts in return. The fur is soft, very warm in winter.”

“I’d like that. Maybe my author will let me do a cave-girl poster or something. Now back to the bio.

“I may be a robot, but I know what it means when a girl likes to look at boys. It says here that humans and goblins are related. I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong by looking at the human boys. It also says the goblin bloodlines are severely interbred after living in close proximity for so long.

“We want to know what your plan is?”

“When your people lived in villages, they, too, became interbred. We traded infants with some of them, to strengthen both bloodlines… the changelings. But the human women tortured our young until we brought their own back. Then some of our females who could take on the appearance of human women came to human men in the night. We conceived, and thus strengthened our line, though the humans refuse all gifts. When some were discovered because their women see through the glamour, they called us evil spirits.. succubi… and the practice stopped. Sometimes I think we should try again. After all, no one is harmed and the men believe only that they had a nice dream.”

“There you have it fans. Can Talla insure the future for her people? Will Goblins return to the surface world? Does she have her eye on a specific human male? You’ll have to read The Goblin Trilogy to find out. I’ll include all the pertinent links on the website.

“For Lisa Burton Radio, I’m Lisa Burton.”
