Different kind of productivity

It wasn’t exactly my goal today not to write new fiction. It just kind of turned out like that.

I wanted to rough out a few posts for the Story Empire site. I had a couple of ideas to get down before I forgot about them. I wound up completing all three ideas, then scheduled the first one.

I’m still not convinced I took the best approach to relaying my concepts, but I have a month before the first post goes live. It’s not unheard of for me to edit a few times after something is scheduled.

I opened up the MS for my Lizzie and the hat story, and wanted to work out a couple of timing and plot issues with it. I might have added 100 words before my daughter walked in.

I was told she was coming today, but had forgotten. She had a few errands to address over here. This led to us chatting and before we finished Old What’s Her Face walked in from work.

Today was almost a complete loss. If you count blogging, it wasn’t. I roughed out three Story Empire posts and wrote this one, too.

There isn’t much to be positive about anywhere around me, so I’m going to declare today a win.

Sundays usually aren’t good fiction days, but I might give it a go. Getting to visit with my daughter also counts, so I’m trying to look on the bright side here.

I have a theory that losing my flex day is going to make every lost day that much more important. Still assessing on that front.

  1. Hard to know what to say on a post like this. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

  2. Good luck finding writing time tomorrow. I know what you mean about every lost day feeling much more important. That’s what I was going through all of this school year since I couldn’t find a moments peace. I’m hoping to find a way to carve out some writing time if that happens again next year.

  3. Whether it’s a job or 7 to 5:30 grandkids, the professor teaching online and underfoot, two pushy hey you! Dogs, family IT agent or knee high grass there’s always something. Some days you just need to close the door and sit down.

  4. I think some days are meant to be dedicated for blog posts. A few weeks ago, I spent time writing and scheduling my remaining Mystery Monday and Legends and Lore posts for the year. Those take the most time because of research, and I wanted to get it out of the way.

As far as Story Empire, I schedule months ahead of time, but just before the post goes live, I’ll review it again and almost always make changes.

Production is production, fiction or otherwise.

  5. It’s always tricky, my dedicated writer friend, always tricky to balance the life of writing with the life of being human. I think you’re doing an amazing job.

  6. One thing you said, Craig, that resonated with me, and that is to look for anything positive to grab onto. In our crazy world that gets crazier every day, that’s a necessity. It’s always a good feeling to get the SE posts started. 🙂

    • It matters. It’s easy to spin everything to a negative, but sometimes I just have to look at the other side of things. This took some hours that I’ll gain later on when I don’t have to stop everything to come up with a post.

I think it can count as a win, even if it wasn’t as big of one as you’d hoped for.

  9. I think writing four posts is amazing. They take time and thought. And seeing your daughter is an extra. Sounds like a good day to me! Sorry you lost your flex day, though. That’s a bummer.

  10. I count blog posts as being productive. I wrote my August SE post yesterday and spent today in editing mode on my latest WIP. I’ve got several ideas for other blog posts, but time is not being kind.
I’d count what you managed as a win!

  11. Blogging counts. It’s still writing. I understand the feeling, though. If I’m not productive, it ruins my mood.

Getting blog posts done is a great accomplishment. I have some to get to as well. Glad you got a daughter visit in.

  13. I also count blog posts as productive – same with other social media posts, as much as I dread doing them. Glad you had a visit with your daughter!

  14. Maybe stepping away for a break will end up freeing time in the end?

  15. HI Craig, I write between 6am and 8.30am every Saturday and Sunday. That 5 hours is dedicated to my novel or short story writing. During the week I often write a poem if I’m not so stressed my brain freezes. I also write book reviews during the week. Other than the above, I fly by the seat of my pants with writing and blogging and fit it in as and when on an unscheduled basis.
