Movies

While I’m off, Old What’s Her Face and I have taken to watching a movie every night. I’m going to go over what I’ve seen so far.

I’ve been writing, and done quite well, but it seems I’m always posting word metrics and such. This is something a little different before I open my MS and get back to work.

Black Widow

I enjoyed it. It would have been better in its proper time slot among the other Marvel movies, but it told a good story. I always enjoy the Marvel films. I can see how they’re setting up the future of comic related films. Enjoyed the banter between Natasha and her sister, particularly the part about Natasha posing.

Ice Road

Didn’t really work for me. I liked the whole man vs. nature thing. Saving the trapped miners also worked as motivation. The antagonist and corporate shortcuts didn’t work for me. Honestly, who lugs dynamite around with them? It seemed a little absurd to me. On the other hand, Old What’s Her Face really liked it. It was adventurous.

Gunpowder Milkshake

I loved it. I am kind of wearing thin on female assassins, but have watched two films about them and liked them both. This one has some great settings and imagery. It’s totally off the wall, and completely fun. Think a combination of Tarantino and John Wick. There is one important distinction between this and Ice Road up above. They sold the suspension of disbelief and it never occurred to me to have the same thoughts I did about Ice Road. Absurd things in the Ice Road film weren’t sold as part of the bargain. It’s a good thing to remember as a writer.

Werewolves Within

I was up for some dark humor, but this didn’t push my buttons. The characters were all caricatures, which I expected. They fit into a group of standard horror tropes, and it was fun, but didn’t quite break any new ground for me. I was excited to see the ATT Girl in an actual role, and she was charming, but it wasn’t quite enough. I’m glad I watched it, so if this were Amazon I might rate it somewhere above three stars.

As I look back on the list, I might not be treating Black Widow fairly. I’ve spent a decade with Natasha, so I’ve seen her tricks. I love what she brought to the Marvel Universe, and might be at a point where I’ve seen it before.

I’m surprised that Gunpowder Milkshake was my favorite. I knew I’d like it, but the visuals and oddness of it appealed to me. I wanted to like Werewolves Within a lot more than I did. This doesn’t mean I disliked it.

How about you? Have you seen any of these? What did you think.

Tomorrow War is on my list, but today is a good day to post and I didn’t watch it yet. I have something brewing on Wednesday, so it was a good time for the movie post.

Now it’s time to open my MS and dive back into drafting new material.

  1. I haven’t seen any of these, but Ice Road and Gunpowder Milkshake are both ones that caught my eye. Despite the flaws in Ice Road, I think I’d like it, and I’m really looking forward to Gunpowder Milkshake. I liked the mini reviews 🙂

Thanks for sharing what you thought of the movies. I haven’t seen any of them, though Black Widdow is on my list of things I’d like to watch.

  3. I haven’t seen any of these movies, but Gunpower Milkshake caught my attention while scrolling through the menu a couple of nights ago. Based on your thoughts, I’ll give it a go. I don’t watch much TV and often tune into something that falls so flat I don’t finish it and go back to reading. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  4. Tomorrow War is brilliant, as is Yesterday, Rocket Man and I care a lot all on Netflix 💜

  6. I haven’t seen any of these yet, and this is probably a record for me waiting to see a Marvel movie. Maybe this weekend? We thought about watching Ice Road but never got around to it.

  7. We watched Ice Road, and we both enjoyed it. I know what you mean about the absurdity, though. Some parts were a little farfetched. We tried to watch Gunpowder Milkshake, but shut it off about halfway. Too… goofy, for lack of a better word… for us.

  8. My son is big into the Marvel Universe. I have only seen a few. I like them but there are other things I like better. These past weeks, I have been watching pre–Olympic sports.

  9. I’m planning to watch “Gunpowder Milkshake,” so I was glad to see your positive review of it. I saw “Tomorrow War” and enjoyed it — lots of cool action and an interesting story underneath. If you’re up for suggestions, I recently saw “Midnight Special” and really enjoyed it. I was touched by the conviction of the parents to strive for the safety of their son, as well as securing his proper path — rather than allow for others to take him for their agendas. That movie’s also on Netflix.

  11. I’ve enjoyed both DC and Marvel superhero movies, but you’re right, ‘Black Widow’ should have been done a while back. That being said, I’m still excited to watch it. Somehow, I knew you would love ‘Gunpowder Milkshake.’ I can’t wait to read what you think of ‘Tomorrow War.’ Happy Writing! 😀

  14. I’ve been bingeing the Marvel shows and haven’t even seen some of these films advertised, so I’m late to the game. Haven’t watched a single one. Glad you’re having movie nights while you’re off, though.

  15. Husby and I have a category for when a movie isn’t quite good but tolerable. We call it, Good enough. Ice Road was that. I’m going to check the others out (except the vampire movie. I’ll probably skip that one).

  16. Enjoyed Black Widow – the villain was truly horrifying …
Gunpowder Milkshake – good, would’ve liked more emotion from Karen Gillian
Ice Road – going to give it a miss – one can only see so many movies of Liam playing Liam.

  17. I’ve seen Tomorrow War, found it a bit flat to be honest but not seen Black Widow so after your review will try to view it soon as

  18. I actually had really low expectations for Black Widow, because the trailer made it seem like the plotline would be very similar to that of “The Incredibles.” My speculation was incorrect and I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.
