Another 4000

Something strange happened at the office on Thursday. As our workday wound down, we all got an email that everything would be closed for a new federal holiday on Friday. The feeling around the office was uplifting. I didn’t know what to do with myself on Friday, so Old What’s Her Face and I just hung out together.

She volunteered for a shift at work today, so I had the house to myself. I planned it for a writing day, and we’ll be together again tomorrow.

I started early and left doors open while it was still cool. I started like I always do, by rereading what came before, and making some small modifications.

As Lanternfish winds down, I have a lot of small sections to create. This leads to a lot of page breaks, but I like what I’m seeing. Everyone is starting to display a degree of independence, and it feels natural now that warfare and piracy are over for most of them. I planned this part out so the words are flowing pretty fast.

Everyone needs to move on, and they aren’t going to do that as a crew. I have a lot of characters to deal with, and I’m taking them in tiers just like I’ve always done. Lesser characters will get a paragraph or two. More major characters will get a deeper dive into their futures.

I’m keeping in mind that a lot of readers had favorites, and want to bring everyone a bit of closure, even if it’s only a line or two.

The country is healing now, and things are looking positive. I should mention there are still root monster antics going on. Some of you became pretty attached to them, and I have something good in mind for them later.

I’m stopping a few words short of 4000 today. I might even finish the draft in another strong writing day, but we’ll see. It will be a little shorter than the first books in the trilogy, but still fit into a fantasy length.

I love it once the middle slog ends and the words just flow. I enjoyed myself today, and I think readers will like it, too.

Did any of you gain a Juneteenth holiday? Did you get some writing time in? Are you doing something fun?

  1. Congrats on the progress and the day off. Working in a school, my days off were set in stone last autumn. I heard that we’re getting Juneteenth off next year, which will be interesting. Schools are typically winding down at this point, so a day off comes during finals, regents, and half-days.

  3. I work in private industry, so Junteenth won’t effect us. I’ve never gotten any Federal holidays off during my career, just national holidays. It’s nice you had that extra day.

Still no writing for me. I don’t work on Fridays, but this one was packed with family obligations. Glad you’re getting so close to wrapping Lanternfish. 4K is a great day!

No extra holiday over here, but our holidays are mostly different to yours anyhow. Nice you got an extra day off though, and even nicer that you followed it with another excellent writing day. Sounds like things are coming together nicely with the book.

We’re organizing a bigger setup for the tortoise, and the table for the bigger vivarium to go on arrived Friday, so we had to get that put together. Something that would have been a lot easier if they hadn’t apparently gotten bored of making the guide holes for the screws part way through, since they had only done some of them, which meant we had to get the others drilled… We called my Dad over to do it, since he’s better at it than we are (we can do some basic DIY, but he does a better job). I also got a bit of reading and crafting time in. That about covers my weekend.

  6. Hooray for an unexpected vacation day! You’ve almost finished the first draft. That always feels so good! HH’s brother and his significant other just finished their visit here to drive to see a friend north of here for a day or two before they fly back to CA. We had a great visit–one of our really nice ones–and I’m losing the day to my sister tomorrow. But I should be able to write again on Tuesday. I’ve missed my keys:)

  7. Hope you had a nice Father’s Day, Craig! Congrats on the new words. 4K is amazing. I’ve been querying agents for the last two weeks straight, so my soul is crying out to write. I don’t feel right if I’m not researching or writing. Do you ever get like that?

  8. Hi, Craig! Congrats on the tremendous word count! I just love it when it flows and you know where the story is going. Since I am self-employed, I didn’t get an official holiday, but my daughter texted me and said the SIL had the day off so they didn’t need me to come out. The gift of the day to catch-up was priceless!!!
