Lamb’s blood on the lintel

Looks like I neglected one of my autumnal chores. To be honest, Home Depot was out of lamb’s blood.

We kind of hoped that by staying home and being hermits all year this virus would pass us by, but that wasn’t to be the case. We both have to work and be around others to a degree.

My wife tested positive for Covid on Monday. As a health care worker, she got a rapid turn around. In fact they told her not to drive off and delivered her results in 20 minutes.

I went for my test on Tuesday. You start off with an online survey to get a case number that you need to write down. They they tell you when and where. It looks something like this.

You aren’t allowed out of your car, you have to be able to follow directions.

After you find a spot, you have to text them with your case number and date of birth. They come out with the kit and you have to swab your own nostrils. The tech bundles everything up and you drive away.

I never got my personal results until about two hours ago. My results were negative. I have no idea how this could happen, because we share a bed, a bathroom, and everything else. Still, there are the results.

I have to quarantine with her, but have to work from home at the same time. Given all the garbage that 2020 threw at us, I’m a veteran of working from home.

Honestly, I’d almost rather have had a positive result at this point. Then I’d have a known date to return to the office. This way, I could be out for two weeks, then earn two weeks of my own at home.

There is no way I’m going to go get the camper after we just winterized it. I’m not moving to another bedroom or any of the garbage people seem to dream up. We live together and we’ll get through this together… or we won’t as the case may be.

Even with a negative test, it messes with your mind. This stuff is on the couch about twelve feet away. It’s more realistic than it was this weekend. I also compulsively checked my email every ten minutes expecting a different answer.

It may not sound like I’m worried, but I am. I know most people don’t have the severe symptoms that make the nightly news, but enough do to be concerned.

This is an author’s blog, so I’ll chock this post up to “slice of life.” I probably won’t update unless there’s something interesting to say. Maybe I can report on word metrics or story gyrations this weekend. That’s why you come here.

Not looking for sympathy or anything. If you take anything away from this, it’s to stay vigilant and even that might not be enough.

  1. I think we’re at the point now where we all know someone personally who has been affected by this. I think we’re now officially in the “hope for the best; plan for the worst” scenario. Praying for your family.

  2. I am SO very sorry to know your wife is infected.
Did she get sick when you were in January?
I am wishing you both all the best, and hope that your quarantine is peacefully boring.

  4. Sorry this happened. As you know, my husband and I had to quarantine for a few days earlier this month. Thankfully, his results were negative. had they not been, we’d be the same way. Don’t have the luxury of living in seperate quarters. Hoping your wife is better soon and that you stay negative.

  6. Hi Craig, I am really sorry to hear about your wife being ill and your own expose. The medical fraternity have learned a lot about C-19 over the past months and there are effective treatments now. I think my family probably had Covid in March but at that time there were very few tests in South Africa. Praying for a good outcome for you and your wife.

  7. Oh no!!! Geez I hope she’s ok!! Wow, that’s bad news. You take care, too, not only because you still could get it, but being a carer can be tough. Hugs to both of you 😦
PS: Um, what’s lamb’s blood on the lintel all about?????

My thoughts go with you and my prayer is that your wife continues to have nothing more than a mild case.
Stay safe and well my friend.
And to those reading, this thing isn’t to be taken lightly.
Like it or not it’s real.

  12. So sorry you’re both going through all this, Craig.

On a twisted note, I’m chuckling at all the wishes for you to ‘stay negative’ … a wonderful example of how much COVID is changing our use of everyday language. Usually, we all want to stay positive, lols, but definitely not in this case!😂🤪

Keeping you and your family get through this as smoothly as possible. Sending cyber hugs xx 🙂

  13. I hate to say this, Craig, but having trouble reading your post. The bits I can read sound like bad news, so hope I’m wrong…Could it be my pc?

  14. Just as I was leaving, your site suddenly became normal. (the white panel appeared and I could read your sad news)… Sending love and all the strength I can muster to help you both through this…

  15. I hope your wife has a mild case and makes a full recovery. I like your, “We’re in this together,” attitude and would do the same if it was my hubby. I’m sure Otto and Frankie will be glad to have the two of you home so much, even if they’re likely the only ones happy about it.

  16. So sorry to hear your wife tested positive. Prayers for both of you – take care of each other. Here in KY, effective tomorrow at 5pm we take several steps backward since our numbers have skyrocketed and folks can’t be bothered to wear a mask.

  18. Gad. I hope it all comes down toa false positive. That could explain your negative result. Wishing you both the best.

  19. Sorry to hear all this, I hope your wife is okay and gets through without ill effects. I can understand your unease too. I honestly think that a health worker should do every test as it’s not an easy test and if you don’t do it correctly it could give a false reading.
I agree it’s pointless self isolating from eachother as you have lived together and done everything together up to now. Sending you both and the dogs healthy vibes.💜

  20. So sorry to hear that, Craig. It’s a frightening thing, but I agree with you. My husband and I have had the same talk. If one of us gets it, we’ll get through it together. Separating into a different bedroom makes no sense when you’ve shared a bed for decades (and before the test).

Sorry I’m late, btw. We ran around all day yesterday, with Dr. appointments and groceries, double-masked to “try” and avoid the spike in cases. My daughter-in-law is a font-line worker, too. Sometimes no matter how careful you are, it finds you anyway. Keeping you and yours in my prayers. ❤

  21. Sad news. I hope your wife’s symptoms are as mild as Covid gets and that you stay healthy. We’ve canceled seeing our kids for Thanksgiving this year to try to stay safe. But even when you’re cautious, you can get unlucky. Hope somehow your quarantine lets you get a lot of writing done and you have some good, quality time with your wife. Maybe lots of Christmas movies??? Take care and good luck.

Sorry to hear this, praying for a quick recovery for your wife and you remain negative. Our niece with MS just had it with few symptoms and her family was okay. I don’t think my husband and I would separate in the same situation either. Sending healing hugs.

  24. Well, that must’ve been scary … may she be one of the vast majority who has no symptoms or only mild ones … just heard on the news (as I was writing this) another vaccine looks to be successful (that makes three)

Wishing Old Whatshername no ill effects and may your quarantine pass quickly. Incidentally, as a member of the Grammar Police, it’s my duty to inform you that it’s “chalk it up,” not “chock it up.” Be well! Ted
