Not tons going on

It’s rare that I get to this point, but the title says it all. Work this week was kind of a disaster, and I’m not excited about the future of some things right now. I won’t say more, but I need to get in another six years or so before I can retire. Craig will play nice. Craig will do what he must.

I didn’t write anything, but still fiddled with the writing business. I sent out a submission for critique on Lanternfish. I also added some personal information to the end of my short story. No idea whether the publisher wants that, but if I don’t send it, I could be shooting myself in the foot.

I still need to read the short one more time, and may do that tomorrow. Mrs. Molony is still hanging around, but since this is my short weekend, I decided to bag it for now. Getting Lanternfish out is my main priority. The critiques are bringing me closer to that goal. I’m a little concerned about having Mrs. Molony ready in time for Halloween.

My artist is busy with Lanternfish projects, so I won’t swamp him with the Mrs. Molony stuff until that’s finished. I have a cover in mind and some fun Lisa ideas to support the story.

I touched up and scheduled my next Story Empire post. That will show up at the end of next week. I really enjoy posting over there, but need another solid idea. My stronger suit is characters, so I should focus on that again. Trying to come up with something for my July posts. Maybe another Expansion Pack or two.

I also started another pin-board on Pinterest. This one is dedicated to magical items and mad science stuff. I like to have reference points when I write and have found them quite helpful. They’re open to anyone, so if they might help you, feel free to help yourselves.

I spent some time finishing Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell on Netflix. I heard it was going away, and I’ve seen the early episodes a couple of times over the years. It kind of dragged in the middle, but finished pretty well. It gave me a cool new magical idea, so I made some quick notes before I forgot it. Who knows if I’ll ever use it, but it’s down in one of my apps if the occasion should come along. All in all, I’m glad I stuck with it. I may have caught the first parts on PBS years ago, but never saw the end until this weekend.

I’d like to find something else to watch on either Netflix or Disney+. Something speculative in nature. In another week or so, Disney+ has one that looks fun called Artemis Fowl. Any recommendations until then? Leave them in the comments.

I’ve made an executive decision to stop drafting new material after Mrs. Molony gets published. My brain needs a break for a while. (Three publications per year, two years in a row.) I’ll work on some kind of promo, but have no idea what that will look like. I’m also going to turn my attention to my storyboards. I’d love to produce another stand alone title, but I promised a Lanternfish trilogy. This means when I start back up, Lanternfish III has to be a priority. A more detailed storyboard will help with that.

Hope all of you are having a good weekend. We went from sunny and about about 95 degrees to raining and 70 degrees today. When one extreme front meets another, at least we didn’t get the gigantic winds. We don’t seem to get tornados out west, so that isn’t a worry.

Talk to me people. I’m trying to avoid all the negativity in the world right now. What’s fun on television? What kind of character tips would you like to see at Story Empire? How’s the weather where you are?

  1. if it weren’t late on Saturday evening I could probably give some really good suggestions on characterizations. Sorry but I have a fried brain and can’t anymore today. It sounds like everything is going well for you so let’s leave it at have a great Sunday. 😀

  2. If you’re looking for a break from the negativity, you’re asking the wrong girl. I think you’re selling yourself short on the progress you’ve already made, though. I know you had a tough week, but you still got stuff done. Take the wins where you can. I hope next week is better for you.

  3. I’m sticking to Hulu mostly. Not sure what you mean by speculative either, so I’m not much help. I tend to watch mostly anime, fantasy, and action shows. The weather is hot and rainy. It’s like spring and summer showed up at the same time. Good luck at work. Sorry it was messy.

  4. Sorry your job’s causing you grief right now. Hope it gets better. But you’ve gotten a lot of writing done this year. We watched the first show in a new series on Netflix last night–Dead Still. About an 1880s Irish photographer who takes pictures postmortem of the deceased with their family. A little quirky and unusual. There are six episodes. I don’t watch much speculative TV, so can’t help with that. Good luck with Mrs. Moloney. Hope you get it finished before Halloween.

  5. Sorry to hear work is not making you happy at the moment. I have not seen Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell on Netflix but I loved reading it when I was younger

  6. Sorry about things with your job. I’ve faced times of uncertainty with mine and it can be stressful.

Someone said something about a redo of 2020. I say we just put it behind us!

  7. Sorry about the job stuff, Craig. Mark wants another 2 years or so before he retires, but what the company will do is still up in the air. They are thinking about ending the three 12-hour days/4 days off thing and going back to 5 days a week, normal hours, but splitting the team between their two buildings. (Exactly what Mark recommended from the start.) Hopefully, they won’t be letting anyone go (especially him) at that time. We’re not quite ready for it, so I can sympathize with you. I’ll send positive thoughts your way.

As for your writing, you already know I can’t even imagine doing as much as you do. I can only focus on one story at a time, I’m afraid, and that says as much about me as it does about YOU and your prolific writing life. 😀 I say do what makes you happy and feels right to you, which only you can know. As for negativity, I try my best to stay far away from any and all of it. Otherwise, I get pulled down into the morass, and that doesn’t do anyone any good, least of all, me. So I say, avoid it whenever and wherever possible. But good luck with that. 🙂 Glad you found a series that seems interesting so far. 🙂

  8. We’ve been re-watching Avatar, the Last Airbender. Their comedic timing is so much fun.

  9. We’ve got the cool stuff going on, too. Only in the mid 70s today and VERY BREEZY. I wanted a pool day but it isn’t in the cards.

I finished edits on my short story. Now I need to let it sit for a few weeks before I give it a final read through. I hope I can get back to my (languishing) WIP soon.

I think you are doing amazing with your productivity! You’re also inspiring me to give more attention to the stray story ideas that pop in my head now and again.

Sorry I can’t offer a TV suggestion. The only thing I watch is America’s Got Talent, and that’s on DVR after being recorded. I am awful with TV, and usually spend the evenings with my nose buried in a book–Harry Dresden, at present!

  10. It’s okay to give yourself a break, Craig. Sometimes we need that. Of course, your muse may have other ideas about that. 🙂 It is so hard to avoid the negativity in the world, but I just had a weekend escape to an outdoor music festival in Luckenbach, Texas with a bunch of my music family friends and it was awesome. Nothing negative touched me for two whole days and nights! It was like stepping into another dimension. Hang in there. I have no TV suggestions.

  11. Lol, I don’t watch tv.
I prefer to watch the world around me and for the most part write about that world.
Watching the news on twitter and seeing how my contingency mind (former military and federal service) sees things happening; presently most governing bodies seem to be pretty much in a shambles. That is another topic for another day.
East Texas is hot and humid.

    • I’ve been paying entirely too much attention. A weekend away is just what I need. I write spec fiction, but try to weave in some of what I see around me. It’s probably time to dive into some speculative research for now. Watch that humidity. It’s a killer.

  12. I binged Locke and Key on Netflix recently – loved it and it’s already been optioned for another season. Based on graphic novels written by Joe Hill. Weather here is hot, heavy, and humid. Supposed to drop back into the 80s this week sometime. We all deserve a break – catch up on some reading and play fetch with Frankie and Otto!

  13. We’d been having quite warm weather too, but it got much cooler and a bit stormy over the weekend. Seems to be warming up again now though.

I’ve read some of the Artemis Fowl books, so am looking forward to seeing that movie. Not sure what to recommend you watch while you wait for it though, since I’m incredibly behind on watching things (despite having Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Sky TV) and don’t know what of the stuff I want to watch might be worth recommending to you, or even where to start, because it’s an incredibly long list. After all, I’m so behind I haven’t even finished all of Game Of Thrones yet. Hope you find something good to watch though.

  14. Here’s a bit of positivity for you – 3 books per year for 2 years straight. WOW. You sir, deserve a break. If you’re looking to kick up your heels with some Netflix, we’ve just started watching Space Force. Pretty funny satire, though maybe more funny if you live OUTSIDE USA 🙂

  15. Hello Craig, I am happy to say I have managed to finish my editing and have sent my novel off to the editor. I too need a bit of a break and am concentrating on fondant art and my children’s books for the next few weeks. I am also hoping to catch up on my reading which has fallen behind, I have books by all of the Story Empire writers on my kindle. PS, my retirement date of 2022 is still in place, even if I have to live on baked beans. I need to get out of the corporate world.
