Apple recently split out iOS, making one for phones and a slightly different one for iPads. Like a good gadget zombie, I dutifully updated everything.
This is followed by the rash of apps that need to be updated. Check that box off.
I do everything on my big iPad Pro. I bought one of the original ones, because I wanted to be able to open more than one window at a time. It works great, but it was limited to different programs.
This is why I lamented my old iPad’s inability to handle the new operating systems. I used to take redlines of my critique sections, open them on the old iPad, then edit on the iPad Pro. Worked great.
The last few rounds, I’ve been opening the redline on my phone and “getting by” that way.
However, the new updates provided something wonderful. I can now open two Apple Pages documents side-by-side. With the big screen on the Pro, it works wonderfully for my purposes.
I made this image as an example for this post. Imagine the Viral Blues side being my work in progress, the Lanternfish side being a redline markup of the latest critique I received. I’m excited, let me tell you.
Rumor is that it works on other gadgets, too. I can’t imagine trying to use this on a phone, but if that shakes your booty, apparently it works there, too.
It still works with different programs, and there are times when I use the slider in the middle to make the right side narrow, then leave a Google search open. Thesaurus.com, maps, you get the idea. The ability to have two documents is a game changer for me.
I may be the only person out there who writes on Apple Pages (with an iPad), but if you’re one of us, you might find this helpful.
It’s always nice when an upgrade is actually useful. I heard WordPress is about to roll out an update. I’m sick to my stomach thinking about it.

WordPress scares me with their updates.

That’s great. If only every improvement was so helpful.

Apple pages sent me to the moon. Had to spend the big bucks for Microsoft. Glad it works for you.

I may be the only one. Lot of Scrivener lovers around lately.

Yeah, I’m still a MS Word person

Hahahah. They all passed away.

I’m a Microsoft person as well, along with Scrivener for writing.

Scrivener gives me a rash. Something about old dog and new tricks. I’m the same way with the new WP posting system.

Not too many “upgrades” live up to the name. This time, it’s pretty handy.

Sigh… you sound like my husband. “Why haven’t you updated your IOS yet?” “It’s super amazingly awesome!” “Have you updated YET?”

Don’t be scared. I’m an ocean away. It’s pretty cool, though.

Have you tried Vellum, Craig? You can write within the program and then format when you’re done. It’s great! I use Word, then transfer to Vellum after for editing.

I have not, but have heard the name around.

The only Apple product I have is my phone. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. But I’ve never found the need to spend $$$ for a Mac. However, it’s nice when updates are useful. Most of the time, updates are scary or useless.

We have a Mac, too. It almost never gets used, because the iPad is so convenient.

Now I have considered an iPad. Maybe some day.

Never thought I would hear of an upgrade that made anyone’s life better. They say if you live long enough you will see everything!
Not looking forward to anything WP gets up to…

Ha ha! Anything WordPress does frightens me. It was so intuitive and simple when I began, then they started tinkering with it. Today, I cringe when they even discuss the idea.

They will be losing customers at this rate!

Could happen. But for today, I’m happy about iPad OS.

marketing strategies! Old Ixxx no longer conform with the time. LoL I like to use a lot of old electronic devices. They do their job, often longer as the newer ones. Michael

Yup. My old iPad still makes for a functional coaster under my cup. Maybe one day, when I’m a famous author, someone will get big bucks for it on eBay.

I am sure it will. Best wishes! Have a beautiful weekend. Michael

Very cool, Craig. I use word to write and I can also view docs side by side but I prefer to use another screen so that the docs are bigger. I have two laptops that I use side by side, one for research one to write and then the big screen for more research or corrections.

That’s similar to how I used the old iPad for edits. I use the split screen sometimes to keep a map available when working in a real place. If I ever write my African Adventure it will be up constantly.

Yes, it is harder to write a landscape that you don’t know well.

Spoken like a true computer gadget guru, Craig! I still use a Windows operating system, so the Apple stuff is greek to me.

We got tired of all the malware and constant virus protection upgrades. When we moved we did everything at once. It was kind of rough, but works well now.

I use Pages for most of my work (hopping back and forth between the Mac and an iPad Pro with keyboard as necessary), and it’s nice to see I’m not the only one. I wish they’d bring back some of its formatting functionality, though… maybe we’ll get an update to Pages that makes me as happy as this iOS update seems to have made you. XD One can hope, anyway.

I’m a Mac gal, but I still use Word.
Happy writing!

I’m just a Word user on a laptop. Can’t imagine trying to use an ipad. Friends have tried talking me into using Scrivener, but it’s too scary.

With the smart keyboard, it’s just like a laptop with the benefit of a touch screen.

I love a useful update. So happy that it worked out for you.
I have both an Apple and a PC. And I am fortunate, my husband is a network engineer and he has me all set up. We have a triple monitor setup currently. I must say, that comes in very handy, WIP, outline, Google. Never have to click between screens.
If there were a Geeks R Us, it would be at my house.
I hope they don’t update WordPress again. I just figured out the last update. Grrr.
