Working on the other stuff

It’s another zero writing of new fiction weekend for me. There are a lot of reasons, and I’m not going to complain about them here. It seems my only option for writing time is to leave the house and go somewhere quiet. I hate the idea of being away from my coffee pot and bathroom for that long, but it could be possible.

I may get a couple of hours next week some time. If I do, I’ll try to make the best of them.

Sprinklers needed some work around here too. I am not a tool guy and never have been. My talents lie elsewhere. I’ve done everything I can, and it’s time to bring in an expert. If I can set things up for after payday it would be perfect. I’m trying to preserve enough money for a work trip to Lewiston.

I can take advantage of continental breakfast at my hotel, and there is a lunch provided one day. I’m still going to need enough gasoline to get home, so I’m trying to be conservative.

Today I tried to work ahead on Story Empire posts. My series on story structure ends Monday, so I hope you’ll all show up. I’ll have to remember to add the back links to the older posts in the series.

I decided to add some expansion packs in my next few posts over there. You know how popular video games sometimes release an expansion pack, that’s the term I’m stealing. The first one will be about fairytale structure. I have it roughed out, and a couple of weeks to polish it up.

There are at least two others I want to include in future posts. They work in conjunction with the hero’s journey, or whatever other structure you might be using. They aren’t required, but could enhance your story. That’s why I’m calling them expansion packs.

I may work ahead on them tomorrow too. That way I feel like I’m being productive, even if it isn’t what I want to be working on. Sometimes working ahead helps clear my slate so I can get more done when I finally score a good writing day.

Tickets to see the new Avengers movie tomorrow. Hope all of you are having a great weekend.

  1. All writing is important, however, I understand your frustration of not being able to write fiction. I’ve been editing all day. Got through chapter sixteen and I’m calling it quits for tonight. Enjoy the movie tomorrow.

  2. I’m way behind on my schedule as well, Craig. DH works straight nights but with the warm spring weather, and our love of gardening, he’s been staying up later (only getting about 4 hrs sleep a night) and I feel it’s more important to be outside with him than writing.
I hope it doesn’t cost me later, though!
Enjoy your trip and the movie- I hear it’s awesome 🙂

  3. I can’t write in public. It’s awful. I can’t relax and focus, so I can’t concentrate. In school, I’d go to the far side of the reference section and sit on the floor, because there were too many people at the tables.
I sure hope you get some good time in.

  4. I feel your frustration. I’m in a drought too. Hope the movie is good – I havent kept up with all the Avengers movies since Thor first came out.

  7. Hope the sprinkler issue isn’t very expensive to fix.

Good plan on working ahead to clear your slate for potential writing later.

  8. For once, I seem to be more productive than you this weekend, but at least your mind is still ticking away! We find ourselves juggling so many hats these days, the trick is choosing the important ones. Luckily, you seem to instinctively know which ones these are….

  9. As they say, Craig, “we make plans and life happens.” I hope you have a great trip and stay safe.

  10. Life can be so limiting at times, Craig. It does for me too. Money is always a big limiting factor, but I shall not complain. I have food in my refrigerator and a roof over my head. I am blessed! If you get two hours to write, give thanks and give that time your full attention! Enjoy the movie.

  11. Hope all your plans pan out (try saying that 5 times fast). I know how frustrated it is to not be able to work on what you want. Maybe you’ll carve out an hour here or there until you get back on track. Happy weekend.

  14. I haven’t done any new writing either (hopefully, it’s not a pandemic). I been in editing mode, and cringing at some of the short stories I’m cleaning up. They’re only a year old but I’m questioning how I thought they were acceptable back then.

I’ve heard the movie is incredible. Enjoy! And fingers crossed you find time to indulge your muse soon. After a while, they get impatient 😉

  15. I like the idea of an expansion pack, Craig 🙂 And I hope you get some fiction time soon – I know that feeling of frustration when you’re kept away from a good story. Also, Endgame is awesome – hope you enjoy it!

  16. Love the expansion pack idea. It will work well with your Story Empire Posts.
I am behind too. No shock there. Always something. I need to be better. At least I am managing my blog a few days per week. That’s my goal for now. Anything extra is a huge bonus.
