Not what I expected.

I went to bed last night with visions of finishing The Yak Guy Project. I needed about ten thousand words, and expected to knock it out today. You see, I had a visitor yesterday.

These guys only appear to me about once or twice per year. It's been that way since I was small. Golden Eagles, all the time, but not Bald Eagles. They always herald some version of good luck. It may be a day when I caught the largest fish or some other small item, but it always works.

I had a working lunch with a colleague yesterday. On my way to the restaurant, an eagle flew over my truck. He wasn't close enough to scratch the paint with his talons, but he wasn't much further either.

The fact is I can't force the eagle. He foreshadows luck of some kind, but I can't manipulate it to what I want. I wanted word count, but that isn't why he showed up.

I managed less than a thousand words of fiction today. If you want to see why, you'll have to visit the Entertaining Stories Facebook Page, because they won't let me upload videos here. Not without going through YouTube first. (Hint, it's Otto.)

Have I ever mentioned,”You Can't Always Get What You Want” is one of my favorite songs. It's so true in so many ways.

I know the eagle is telling me something, but have no idea what. Sometimes it amazes me when it happens a week later, but it happens.

Some of you probably think I'm crazy, but when you observe something enough times you start to pay attention.

I managed to be productive in other ways. I wrote some blog posts, with frequent interruptions. I communicated with my Story Empire colleagues about an upcoming project, and we moved it forward.

Something is on my horizon, so I'm kind of excited about that. It could be something small, but it adds a nice perspective to the weekend.

  1. Couldn’t resist digging out my old animal symbolism books. Pretty useful when making a culture that uses totems. Eagles are connected to illumination of spirit and creation. Seems to fit what you’re talking about with luck and good tidings.

  3. I am open to talisman and synchronicity, to serendipity and fate — and while my education makes me aware that it’s pre-operational thought, I cannot deny the auspicious occasions I’ve experienced 🙂 I can’t wait to read about your new good fortune!

  4. I think you are on to something. The Eagle is a powerful totem and as you say you have experience in the foretelling. Always a good sign. Have a great weekend.

  5. I have my lucky socks, my lucky earrings, and my lucky underwear. I believe in them. They are easier to use than your eagle.

  6. My husband says getting lucky means he might be getting buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup for Sunday breakfast instead of what it used to mean…lol I have a strong faith in symbolism as part of the spirituality that sustains me. Maybe some of Jack Higgins luck is going to rub off on you.

  7. Love eagles. Such gorgeous, majestic creatures. I’m with you. I do believe there are signs in this universe. If we pay attention, we see them. While writing Wings I had a bald eagle fly a few feet above my windshield, and he stayed with us for a good mile or so. Later that I day, I wrote that scene into Wings. Now with Blessed, crows play a huge role. Wouldn’t you know it, every time I leave the house they stay with me. The odd part is, while editing Cleaved, no crows. The second I got back to editing Blessed, they’re everywhere. Must be a good sign.

  8. Do you have any Native American heritage, Craig? It is apparent to me that the Eagle is your Spirit Animal and yes, he is bringing a message every time. My late husband’s was the Owl and I wrote about it in the last book. He’d always told me that when he left this earth I would hear two sounds; a train whistle and the hoot of an owl…It’s in the book. 🙂 There is a GREAT book called Animal Spirit Guides by Steven D. Farmer, Ph.D. Check it out.

I don’t think you’re crazy. Or if you are, its some wonderful kind of crazy! 😄 Birds are messengers, I have no doubt of that. Sometimes they show up in unusual ways. You have to pay attention. He’s a magnificent creature.

  11. Any good luck talismans should be used sparingly and not be tied up with strings! LOL Hope your little bonus is a great one 😀
How long before Otto busts the squeak? 😉

  13. I’d love to see an eagle! My mom always said birds tell a story of what’s going to happen. Though, usually, here, it’s a raven or black bird that heralds death but an eagle, that would be awesome to see and no doubt, they would bring good tidings!

  15. I’m late checking in (aren’t I always on the weekend), so the eagle is already a few days in the past. I think its very cool you’ve noted this connection through your life. I’ve probably seen a bald eagle all of three times and they are truly majestic birds. What a great messenger to have.

And Otto’s play date was cute. Sometimes you’ve just got to have fun with the pup.

  17. Hello Craig! I do believe certain animals have qualities like the ones you mentioned. Eagles are the rulers of the sky and have keen sight and bring the animal magic of manifestation and visionary, so seeing future good fortune isn’t too far fetched. 😉
