“Hi this is Craig.”
“Hello. Is this Craig Boyack of Entertaining Stories?”
“Yes, it is, who’s this?”
“Hey Craig. It’s John Howell of Fiction Favorites.”
“Oh, hi John. I didn’t recognize your voice.”
“I don’t think we’ve spoken before so I’m not surprised.”
“So, what can I do for you, John.”
“You may have heard I’m relaunching My GRL.”
“Yeah I heard about that. You’ve been blogging about it for a while.”
“I know, right? I was wondering if we could do a guest post on your site?”
“So why are you relaunching My GRL.? I liked it first time around.”
“it’s a little complicated but long story short is my contract with the publisher is finished.”
“You can renew, can’t you?”
“Well, yes but I was not so thrilled with the cover which they chose.”
“Ah. You had no cover control?”
“No, and since all the promotion was up to me they never authorized any kind of price discounts. Made it a little tough to attract new readers.”
“You published His Revenge and Our Justice on your own right. How’d you do that?”
“I got a waver on the characters and went ahead and published the next two.”
“Wait. They had the rights to your characters?”
“Yup. For the term of the agreement which was three years. It was clear they didn’t want to publish the next two, so I asked for and received a waiver.”
“Is this character rights thing common?”
“More common than you’d think. That’s why it’s real important for authors to read their contracts carefully.”
“Makes you glad to be an Indie, doesn’t it?”
“It sure does. How about that post? You have an opening.”
“I think we just finished a post. How about we run this conversation. It might help some authors make better decisions on their path to getting published.”
“That would be great, Craig. Oh yes, Let’s not forget to mention My GRL is at a special introductory price of $0.99.”
“You got it, John.”
“Thanks, Craig. Say hey to Lisa for me. Talk to you later.’
“I will. Bye John.”

I've just gotta add my 2¢ to this one. I've read these books and they are wonderful. With the relaunch, there's never been a better time to jump into the John J. Cannon stories. John Howell has a wonderful blog, and you really ought to check it out, it's called Fiction Favorites.
Interesting, John. I knew you got the green light to publish your next two, but didn’t know the details. Makes me all the more grateful to have self-published. I don’t know how I would do if I didn’t have my KDP dashboard to refer to. It makes a huge impact on planning sales and what-not. And it’s kinda comforting to see the book selling and being read, cause not everybody writes reviews as we well know.

I don’t think I sell as much as a self published guy, but I’m glad I hold the rights to Lisa Burton.

You raise excellent points, John. Publishing contracts can have all kinds of restrictions in them, and some publishers are difficult to work with. Wishing you all the best with your re-release.

Thanks, Staci. I learned by getting burned. Not the most sophisticated form of lesson plan. :-D. Thanks for the visit.

I didn’t know the story behind how this trilogy came to be. Glad you’re in the driver’s seat, John, and making the decisions for your work and your characters. Wishing you the best with the relaunch. It’s a great series and I hope the relaunch brings many new fans.
