Don’t touch that dial. You’ve found Lisa Burton Radio, the show where the characters bring the stories to life. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl.
Today we have Ned Traines on the air with us. Ned is the Chief of Police in Port Aransas, Texas. “Welcome to the show, Ned.”
“Hello, Lisa. I’m a fan of yours, and it is an honor to be on your show. Also, that boss of yours is some writer. I can tell you his book The Playground had me reaching for my soothing syrup several times.”
“You’re so sweet, Ned. Now, tell us how you came to be the Police Chief, and how you decided on such a beautiful area? I visited an author, John Howell there one time.”
“I started out in the military police where I was lucky enough to get my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. After discharge, I signed up for an interview at the FBI. There were a couple of hundred applicants and to my surprise I got the job. I spent twenty-five years as a agent doing all kinds of assignments. Most I can’t discuss. Eventually, it came down to finding a place to retire but not retire if you know what I mean. Port Aransas was looking for a Chief of Police so I applied and have been there for the last five years. Not an exciting story I know, but that’s how I came here. Oh yes, I know that John Howell guy. I try to stay out of his way and yes it is a beautiful area.”
“Do you wear a uniform, or are you plain clothes? What kind of firepower do you carry?”
“I usually wear what everyone wears. You know, fishing shirt, cap, and shorts. I have a light jacket on most of the time so my two 9mm automatic pistols don’t scare anyone. They can look pretty nasty to tourists.”
“Those are pretty popular. Do you carry them equally, or is one a backup, like some carry in an ankle holster? I only have one, and we refer to it as the B.A.G., which means big assed gun. It’s appropriate, because it’s .50 caliber. I have to carry it in my purse.”
“I have to tell you I usually leave one at home except if I’m involved in some nasty business. Since some pretty weird people came to town, the business has definitely gotten nastier. I like your idea of a purse carry. It is pretty common for plainclothes female cops. I see it most in the big city. I’m impressed you have a .50. Takes a strong person to fire that thing. Of course, you look pretty strong.”
“John Cannon was a guest of mine on a previous show. He lives in Port Aransas. Do you know him?”
“Yeah, I know him. In fact, we have become pretty good friends. When I first met John it wasn’t that way. He was found unconscious next to the body of a young woman who sold him his boat. What was particularly interesting he was lying on the gun that killed her. I figured John was the one who murdered her. Maybe a lover’s spat. Of course,he had this fantastic story about some guys approaching him, but I thought he was lying. We found out he didn’t do it and was a victim. It seems some terrorists wanted his boat, uh My GRL was the name, to create mayhem for America.”
“So you and John teamed up to battle a terrorist? This wouldn’t be Matt Jacobs would it? He called in during John’s interview, and he’s creepy as hell.”
“Well, I can’t come out and accuse Matt of anything I can’t prove but let me say if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. Anyway, we finally got to the bottom of who was who and arrested a bunch of people on suspicion of terrorism. Mr. Matt Jacobs was nowhere to be found. John and his friend Jason did stop the terrorists and for that the President wanted to give him a medal.”
“Now wait a minute. I know how busy a Police Chief gets. Tell us the truth, have you been reactivated with the FBI?”
“After it was announced that John was to receive the medal a whole bunch of crap…er…violence started happening. I was reactivated into the FBI with the sole responsibility of making sure John was safe. My orders came from the highest level, and I have to tell you it was not an easy assignment.”
“Do you have any idea what their next move is?”
“It is very clear to me that certain individuals, and I’m not saying who, have the idea to get John to help them. I know for a fact that they are hell bent on undermining the President and creating uncertainty in the oil market. I do want these people to know that they won’t get away with their sinister plot, and they’ll have to come through me if they intend to hurt John. That man is a hero and like a son to me so they had better take heed to my warning.”
“We have a caller today. Do you mind, Ned?”
“I just said something that I never told John. It’s probably him. Put him on and I’ll call him my son to his face.”
“Hello caller, you’re on the air. Do you have a question for Ned?”
“Is this the Lisa show?”
“Yes, caller. Who are you, and what is your question?”
“This is Geneen Taines, Ned’s wife. Can you pass a message to Ned?”
“You can tell him yourself. We’re on the air right now.”
“Oh. No wonder he didn’t answer his phone.”
“Geneen, you said you had a message for Ned.”
“Um, okay. Ned, a nice man called from Keewaydin Lane Books.”
“Okay, honey. What did he want?
“He said he wants to write a book about your exploits as an FBI agent.”
“Did he leave his name?”
“Yes, I wrote it down. It’s John W. Howell.”
“Oh my gosh, Ned, that’s the guy I interviewed when I flew down to Texas.”
“He’s the guy behind all the mayhem with My GRL and now His Revenge.”
“He is, honey? Well I don’t want you messing around with him. He almost did us all in on that so called John J. Cannon trilogy.”
“Okay Geneen. I’ll call this guy after the show. Thanks.”
“What are you going to tell him?
“Can we talk about this after the show?”
“Oh yes, I understand.”
“Goodbye dear. I’ll be home soon.”
“Oh, and can you pick up a loaf of bread on your way home?”
“Yes dear. Goodbye.”
“There you have it listners. It sounds like John Cannon is still in trouble. It also sounds like we may be teasing a Ned Traines book, maybe even a trilogy. What do you think, Ned.”
“I really don’t have a ton of control. If this Howell guy decides to write a book, I can’t do much to stop him. I sure will be on the lookout for a partner, though. You have any interest, Lisa?”
“For Lisa Burton Radio, I’m Lisa Burton. I’ll post some links so you can check out the John J. Cannon trilogy for yourselves.”

That has to be one of the best ways to announce a possible spin-off that I’ve seen. 😀

It sounds interesting, and he didn’t completely commit. Great plan, I think.

Thanks, Craig, and Lisa. This was a nice treat. I tried something new this time. Instead of a reblog I set up a pingback. We’ll see how it works. So far a little light.

New things are good, unless it’s a WordPress new thing. Those I am a bit skeptical of.

PS. The wallpaper is cool. Sort of like a cross between a crab and an octopus surrealistic in the sky.

He’s a parody for the evolution vs creationist arguments. There is a pastafarian religion around the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Great interview with Ned and I loved the call-in part. Looks like Ned is going to have to do some serious chatting with “that Howell guy.” Hopefully John W. can twist his arm into agreeing to his own series!

I think Ned would be great. He has the background, and can pick up milk on the way home.

Thanks Mae. Ned is standing here right now with one of those 9mm’s. I think I will do it. I would ask you to call for help from the FBI but……

Great interview Lisa and Ned – 😀 Some young Ned Tranes books, huh? Sounds like Geneen might have something to say about that! 😉

I think they might be fun. The spousal side of things could bring a new perspective to the tales.

I love how the character used John as an antagonist-type character. So fun! And a perfect way to shine a light on all his books. Well done. These interviews keep getting better and better. I really need to carve out time to do one.
