In the USA, I’m allowed to set money aside from my paycheck to cover medical expenses. The money is pre-tax, so there is about a 30% savings by doing it this way.
Every year, my wife and I pull a number out of thin air and create what’s called a Flex account for this purpose. My employer handles the rest for me. I never touch the money. I am given a card to use when paying for medical stuff.
The insurance through my employer is very good, but I use my Flex card to cover my portion. The year runs from July through June in my case, and most years we spend it all by October. This brief explanation is for my non-USA readers.
This means that it’s rarely my turn and I tend to skip things. I got some specific things checked that everyone is supposed to get at fifty. I got mine at fifty-three to give you an example.
This year we had money left, and I’d been griping about my eyes. We decided to get me an appointment, and that I could spend freely. The reason is when Flex money is left over, the government gets to keep it. No arguments, the ability to budget is my sole responsibility. This causes us to be careful how much we put in the Flex account, and we try to put slightly less than what we need in there.
Turns out, I haven’t had an eye appointment since 2012. That was the year I learned about tri-focals and refused to get them. I’m on the computer so much that a sliver of correction isn’t good enough. I chose to get two sets of glasses; one for regular use, and one for computer use. Each pair of glasses is bifocal with a reading chip in them.
Turns out things are worse. Not a big surprise, since I was complaining about my eyes. All three corrections are going up, with my reading and computer vision correcting +2. I am kind of excited, because the testing machine clarity was so much better.
With Flex money to burn, I decided to get two new pair of frames too. I currently have a squarish pair for regular use, and an oval pair for workstation use. I hoped to do this again, but that isn’t the case.
Turns out ovals are out of style. It’s just nice to be able to know which pair is which, even by touch. I really like my tiny glasses, but it looks like the new ones will be bigger too. I like more of what I call a cowboy style; wire frames, small, etc. I got as far as wire frames.
I really freaked them out when I asked for glass lenses. Turns out they are not en Vogue either. I’m rough on glasses and plastic lenses would get all scratched up in no time. As such, it’s going to take about four weeks to get my new glasses.
I asked about Lasik, and learned that I am a poor candidate for the surgery.
Who knows, maybe my new glasses will cut down on eye strain. I might be able to write longer without feeling like someone is shoving hot bamboo splinters into my eyes. Maybe I’ll even spot the occasional typo that slips through.
Do any of you skip medical maintenance issues? Do you take a back seat to the rest of your family? Is anyone able to be an author with tri-focals? Do I have to change my Moai banner when the new frames arrive?
Oh goodness, I’m the worst with medical issues. I hate doctors, mostly because it’s a bother to schedule appointments and I don’t have insurance. The state wants to charge me $250 a month for sh**ty insurance…no thank you. I need glasses but I don’t have them and I even skipped my breast exam this year. You’re way better off than me!

I’ve lived that life at one time too. Are they taxing you now because you don’t have insurance?

Thankfully they found a loophole so I didn’t get penalized for 2015. They are not sure if they can do it again for 2016 but I’m going to wait and see. I keep trying to get insurance but it’s just not affordable.

Don’t skip those breast exams, sweetie! I did.. and wound up with Stage IIIb Breast Cancer. And believe me, you don’t want that. Check out your county health services – I did, and I am really glad. I was able to find low cost health care. Of course, that was after the multi-hundred-thousands of dollars in cancer treatments. Sigh.

You are welcome. We all have to take care of each other. I just wish someone had stayed on top of me about my exams. Now, I am Poster Girl! Da da daaaaa!

Oh, do I know how you feel…. I finally broke down and went to the eye doctor for the first time in years. Several years ago I was fortunate enough to get Lasix, and I was thrilled out of my pea-pickin’ mind. You see – my eyes were at 600 correction and rising. Yep, blind as a mole. The Lasix brought me to 20/20 in one eye and the other, which I left for a week (to make sure I didn’t lose the sight in the eye I had done – it was the most extreme surgery that had been done at that point in time) was 20/15 by the time it was done as I had been running on just the one eye for a whole week, leaving the un-lasixed eye without glasses. The change was astounding!
When I went to the eye doctor I had 1.25 in one eye, 1.5 in the other. The difference is amazing. My eye strain is MUCH better! I needed glasses for driving and another pair for reading/computer. I went ahead and got lineless bifocals and though it is taking a bit to adjust, they are working out. It was a pain in the butt to keep switching glasses. I like to watch movies and read at the same time and it just wasn’t working for me. The bifocals are much better.
Now – here is a secret. Shh – don’t tell anyone! LOL Check out Zennioptical.com!!! I got my new bifocals, frames plus lenses plus shipping for less than $50.00 ($48.85!) I also picked up a pair of distance sunglasses for driving ($39.85), a pair of reading glasses for when I am just chillin’ with my tablet ($28.95), and a pair of clear driving glasses for nighttime ($33.85). That means a pair for every need – and all of the frames are different! A lot better than the $200 I spent on my pair from the doctors office. Now, if I can just get used to wearing the darn things – 😉

That’s a pretty happy result. I know I could get a better selection of frames elsewhere, and likely get them for less. I kind of hate running around and shopping for the deals.

I did it for you (wink). I checked out several sites: glassesusa.com, eyebuydirect.com, framesdirect.com, coastal.com, warbyparker.com (they have the coolest frames, but they are too expensive for my budget), 39dollarglasses.com, express-glasses.com, globaleyeglasses.com, lenscrafters.com (sticker shock!), and a couple others I don’t remember.
Price, availability of lens types (they have wonderful blue blocker lenses), shipping, customer service – Zenni won hands down. I stepped on a pair of reading glasses and they send me a new set of frames right away. I just had to pop out the lenses from the old broken frame and pop them into the new frames (there is a video to show you how) and I was good to go.

I prefer oval glasses. I didn’t even know glass was an option when I got my last pair a year or two ago. Honestly, I skip the health maintenance thing because I want to save money or not have to fight insurance for myself. That’s probably what brought me into my current journey through tests and appointments. It really does seem to be more of the money issue than forgetfulness with me.

Makes me think there has to be an easier way. There’s so much regulation these days that it’s never going to get easier.

I know. You have to jump through so many hoops that it’s like a stress test with every appointment.

LOL! So many questions! 😀
I’m overdue for an eye exam. I should have went last July but there was always something looming that put it off. I’ve always been faithful about going every two years, but I probably won’t get there until July of this year which will make it three. First time I ever went that long.
I had a pair of trifocals many years ago but the bifocal part wasn’t strong enough for me, so now I just get prescription reading glasses.
I’ll be curious to see what happens to the banner (and the “Craig bust”) when the new glasses arrive.

I have a hunch it won’t change. Art is sacred you know.

I’m certain you can author with trifocals. There are blind writers. No excuses 😉
Since The Mister’s new job, we are all getting free eye exams, and free eyeglasses! Isn’t that amazing?!? We can all get new eyeglasses every two years! We don’t all need them, but we CAN! We CAN! By the by, I buy one pair at the place and then buy the second pair online at Zenni for cheap, cheap, cheap. I’ve been doing it for years, never had a problem. But, like your glass lenses, they take a long time to ship.
Those health expense accounts can be great for paying remaining bills. I generally put off dental work. Not forever, but a greater gap between procedures, else I bleed the bank dry!

I do the same thing with dental work. We can also get lenses every year, and frames every two years. There is our portion to pay though, and optical insurance is somewhere around 50%. So I drag my feet.

Yep. Our vision stuff is 100% covered, which thrills me!
And I mean really, even if it were free, who’s in a hurry to see a dentist?! lol

That’s awesome. I’m with you on the dentist too. I’d have a hard time going to the dentist even if he served beer and had a curvy dental assistant.

This is a great benefit available to working Americans. When you retire that benefit goes away. So the payments are all post tax. Just what we fixed income types need.Good to hear you did the eyes.

With my wife, I just assumed I’d work until I die. Never thought about it going away at retirement. Great point.

Some companies do have reimbursement accounts for retirees which are good.

Trifocals?!??!?? Glass lenses? You really prefer glass?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh heck yeah. I toss them on a desk lens down and they don’t scratch. I’m the guy who reaches to pick something up, and they fall on the concrete. Glass usually survives, plastic will scratch.

Glass cracks. And is heavier. My father has the same issue with preferring glass glasses. Drives everyone crazy. 😛

All true, but I’ve never cracked a lens in all the years I’ve worn them.

It’s been 5 years for glasses for me. I just got bi-focals. I need better glasses for the computer but not happening right now.

That’s close to my timeframe. It is overdue though.

I know I really freak them out going for glasses. I don’t care what’s in style, I want my glasses lenses free floating without a frame. We have a lady in our office who tries to sell me “fashion” frames. She insists I should have a pair for every outfit (like she has). After trying on dozens of pairs, I always go back to my free floating lenses. Me and the boss are overdue by almost a year. We’ve spent our flex account already and it’s not even mid-summer. More credit card debt on the horizon.

I understand all of that. I went with frames they had, but should have shopped around. I’ve put mine off for so long it’s becoming an issue.

LOL No, you don’t have to change your banner. I can’t put off medical stuff, because I have a few issues. The main being rheumatoid arthritis. Writing has been amazing for keeping my hand pain to a minimum, though. But I do tend to downplay things so my husband doesn’t drag me to the doctor when I’m in the middle of writing. He’s relentless. As far as reading glasses, I’m so picky. I’ve had this one pair with orange-tinted frames for about 10 years. I can’t find the same lenses anywhere now, so my husband has to keep replacing parts. Drives him crazy! LOL But he’s so good at keeping them ship-shape.

I may have been able to just get replacement lenses, but we want to spend all the Flex money. I’m sure it will all be fine, but there may be a getting acquainted phase.

I recently got my first pair of varifocals. They’re bigger than I’m used to, too. But they’re great, much better for computer work than my contacts. My prescription is HUGE, -10 in my right eye, -7 with an astigmatism in my left. I’m not good with dental work, although I always make sure my kids get their checkups.I’ll be 50 meet year… I guess it’s a good time to get everything checked out.

I’m excited to get mine. Being able to see is nice. Get the standard checkups at 50. If nothing’s wrong that’s wonderful. If not, catch it early.
