We authors tend to all try the same things to promote our works. We blog, we tweet, we sign up for paid promotions. It all works to a degree, and there is no magic spell that will help us stand out from the crowd.
I've been known to try some crazy things from time to time, and today is no exception. I see that adult coloring books are all the rage today. Sadly, I don't have any of those. Still, maybe an old school trick still has some life in it.
My regular readers know that Lisa Burton, the robot girl, is a recurring character on Entertaining Stories. I recently promoted her to 'Official Spokesmodel' for Entertaining Stories.
Lisa takes her job seriously, and when I'm writing she really gets into it. She uses alternate voices to read back my dialog, calls me out for too many coincidences, and dresses for the part.
I recently sent her over to Sean Harrington's studio to pose with some of the outfits from my novels. Sean designed a paper doll sequence and you can have it for free. Those of you who've been lamenting a Lisa of your own, can now have one.
She's pretty helpful too. Just stand her next to your computer and read out loud to her. She will miraculously help you spot difficult passages and weak dialog.
The doll is Lisa in a classic James Bond pose. It clearly shows off what she did to $20,000 worth of GMO human skin.
I chose to print my doll on card stock. She stands up better when you dress her up.
Some of you may be happy with simply the doll. She's just as helpful as when she's in costume.
While the doll represents Wild Concept, there is an outfit for every novel.
If you prefer chasing the dreaded demon, El Chivato, through the Panamanian jungle, there is an outfit for that.
Maybe you want to delve deeper into witchcraft in your story. The outfit from Will O' the Wisp is there for you. Here are a couple of examples:
With the hat, which Lisa knitted herself, she filled in for Argon the cyclops. Without the hat, she assisted with any number of characters, from the Southern Dwarves to a Remsian nobleman.
Maybe you prefer Lindsay Pennington, from Arson. I still say this little pyro is the most fun supporting character I ever wrote.
Of course you can go absolutely crazy and mix them up if you like.
The whole kit is absolutely free. I've made a new page at the top of my blog. Click on the printable PDF files and go to town. Make as many as you want. Spread them around town. Give them to friends, with my blessing. I'm sure Lisa would be proud to serve as your bookmark.
A big thank you goes out to original cover artist, Sean Harrington. This project wouldn't have been possible without him.
Another big thank you to everyone who reads Entertaining Stories. Your comments are what keeps me motivated. Who knows, maybe one day I'll offer up a small Muse to put on the other side of your computer.
What fun!!! She’s the perfect spokesmodel because she can really shift her skin and tissues around, speak any accent/dialect, change her eye color, and just has creative fashion sense.

She worked out really well too. I put her on permanent display in my closet tiki bar. She’s wearing her Cock of the South regalia at the bar. Tell all your friends. They might like one too.

Looking for some new marketing ideas. The fantastically creative Craig Boyack and his accomplices have come up with this really neat paper doll. I loved them as a child and plan to print this on some photo stock paper for my granddaughter.

Thank you for doing that. Every bit helps.

You’re welcome. My granddaughter has these fashion apps on iPad where you can dress up dolls with hair styles and colors, make-up, outfits (it’s all princessy stuff), but what fun it would be to have an app to do character dress up, or even have a video game where all your book’s worlds become a different level in a skills and knowledge challenge.

If only I had the technical skills to make a game. Lisa could easily be a lead character in a video game.

I also do funny church/religion soft funny cartoons. My church will start publishing in weekly bulletin. Hey, I tried new stuff and garnered another “I’m being published” credit. Maybe working for God royalty free will pay off. Hey ya gotta scrape for every possibility. Maybe chamber of commerce related for their newsletter next !

I’m sorely tempted to make up a sequence of these dolls and secretly place them on the desk displays at furniture stores.

Yes, of course – Sleeping Beauty dolls in the mattress section. Give Lisa a metallic dragon head helmet for rock concert sales.

Thanks. We’ll see if it takes me anywhere. I’ll tell you what though, I had a lot of fun putting this together.

Bwahahaha! I gotta ask, is your doll life-size? And, does your wife know? *wipes tears away* Anyway, you have the funniest imagination, Craig. I’ll have to print some out for my granddaughters. Hey, you think Lisa would mind if I bloodied her up as a stand-in for a corpse? Hmm…you might be onto something here.

Now, now. Lisa is set up to print on an 8.5x11sheet. My wife refused my request to cut out those little hollows where her arm is. She just looked at me and rolled her eyes. I’m sure Lisa wouldn’t mind being a corpse. She had to work as jungle men in the rainforest before.

Well that is wacky! And truly original! Good luck with it, Craig, its sure to get you noticed, lol!

I love it! As a collector of paper dolls, I couldn’t imagine a better idea! (I have actually created some paper dolls for my characters too, I love it!)

So what does the artist charge for such a package? It could be the new hot thing! (Seriously. I want to know.)

I encourage you to contact Sean at the link provided. It may depend upon the complexity of the project. He’s a nice guy and works pretty fast too.

Oh I see, what a cool idea! Yes, it’s fun to come up with some different way to help promote books, hence my recipe one! 🙂

It’s very clever, and I may try that free form pie come winter.

Oh yes do! It’s pretty quick and easy (well, apart from the waiting for the apples to soak for 24 hours part!). If I was making it in the winter, I might add some wintery/fall spices like cinnamon.

Perhaps the wine flavors too, and can be warmed up with some spices.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking, like mulled wine (although I don’t think you really have mulled wine in the states do you?)

It has become pretty popular here during the holidays. It’s only been in the last half dozen years that it’s gotten any popularity.

Ah right, that makes sense then because when I lived in the States (1997-2001) nobody seemed to have heard of it there. But yes, those are the types of flavours which I think would be good in the pie for winter.

Thanks, Nicholas. I kind of hope it draws a little bit of attention to my various works. I’ll be happy if someone just wants to play with them too. I couldn’t think of any other freebies for an ebook only guy.

I couldn’t figure out any freebies for a guy who only offers ebooks. This is my attempt. There have been a couple readers who hit me up for audio books. I may have to try that.

I don’t know why you don’t go into the printed book market, too. After all, it’s free. 🙂 I think this is such a clever idea! You really were thinking outside the box.

I’m with SKN, here – most marketing ideas are same old, same old. I’m not saying they aren’t good or don’t work, but what the heck?? This is a great post – fun and energizing! Enjoy.

Nothing surprises me anymore. I get a few paper doll downloads every day. They seem to be helping me spread the word. Maybe I ought to commission some of those adult coloring book pages too.
