It's my son and daughter-in-law's anniversary today. Regular readers know what this means for grandma and grandpa.
I never got any writing done at all. I work ten hour days, and wound up tired at the end of the week. I slept in – it happens.
We wound up taking the kids to the Boise zoo. I really didn't want to bring them home, but Grandma didn't think the zoo would keep them. (But honey, we'll never know if we don't ask?)
Our zoo is very good for its size. They don't have any mega fauna, or apes larger than gibbons. They do a good job with what they have. I always enjoy it, and may go back alone one day.
When you take little kids it's fun, but a different kind of fun. They need to hit every snack bar, and all the playground equipment.
The littlest one had to climb on every bridge, fence, or landscape rock they placed. For a while our stroll involved take three steps, the little one fell off something. Cry and scream, dust off, three more steps and repeat. Still, we forged along.
My favorites are always the Siberian tigers. These days they are Amur tigers. I have no idea why, but same thing. They didn't cooperate today. Only one was out, and she soaked up the sun at the far side of her enclosure.
The lions were much more accommodating.
I still have that young couple in Africa in mind. They are great characters in search of a plot. It has to be one of my kind of plots, but I'm still thinking of them. Maybe I should create an outline and see where it takes me.
I'm sorely tempted to take my iPad to the zoo early and have this old gal help me outline it. It was late afternoon, and something tells me she's a morning person.
I went to the site and it said Red Panda cubs. That’s awesome. 🙂 I remember there being something like Amur Tigers in the Central Florida Zoo, but they were called Amur Leopards. Guess both of them are from that area.

Finally got around to looking it up. Really odd that they changed the name from Siberian to Amur when those leopards exist. Very confusing.

Political correctness for animals?

As good and strange an explanation as anything else I came out of. I was going with a drunken zoologist screwed up some paperwork.

They were sleeping on a high shelf today. I’ve seen them before, but today wasn’t the day. I told the kids it was Master Shifu.

The red pandas were running all over the place the last time we went. Spent maybe 5-7 minutes letting my son shout and laugh at everything. That’s the point of a zoo trip that I always love. That one animal moment that sticks with the kid (even the adult ones) for the rest of the week at least.

The grandkids got to pet the skunk. That was pretty cool.

My son was asking if there was a skunk to pet. Not sure I’d trust him with that.

The zoo person held it so they could gently pet it. They made them use hand sanitizer before and after. I almost met one on my way to work the other day.

Not sure if a skunk is better or worse than a possum.

Not to hit with your car. To pet, they might be even.

Haven’t had the ‘pleasure’ of the former. Ran into a possum once when walking and those things are ugly.

They are ugly, but skunk car is a friend for life.

True. Why can’t they all be cute and harmless like bunnies?

They had a Belgian rabbit in there that must have been well over 20 lbs. he rivals Lisa’s fictional Bunny for size. I need one now.

Get a few of those and train them like guard dogs. Freak out every potential burglar in the area. 🙂

But, but, just look at the bones.

Are those Halloween decorations?

Sorry, it was my attempt at a Monty Python guard rabbit joke.

I know. Just ran in another direction with it. Hard to have a response to ‘look at the bones’ without being the guy to walk over there and get killed by the furry thing.

She’s a cat… and all cats are definitely middle of the night when you’d rather be sound asleep people. 🙂 It sounds like you had a fun day. (Also, great photo!)

Maybe she has some plot ideas.

I saw that on one of my feeds. Some of those photographers are crazy.

Our zoo is also a good one. I do prefer to take them now that they’re bigger. For one thing, I don’t miss pulling the wagon 🙂
If you slept in, you needed the sleep!

Can’t beat a good trip to the zoo! Inspiration is everywhere and animals are so undemanding. Just happy being!

I LOVE the zoo! And I can’t wait to be able to take my granddaughter. She’s only 1 1/2 so it’ll be a while… something to look forward to. I’ve never thought about it before, but I think you might be on to something. The zoo is a great place to get the literary juices flowing. Do it. Take the iPad and bang out that outline.

I think I’ll try it. I haven’t given that idea much thought, but when I finish a couple things I’m going to outline a couple.

Sounds like you’ve had a busy weekend! The zoo is probably a great place to get some inspiration.

It really was. I have the characters for a future story, but they need a plot of some kind.

When I was in Boise we didn’t go to the zoo for that reason. We went to the Aquarium, all the kids loved that, I had to keep a few out of the stingray pool though.
Going to the zoo alone would be a good idea for that outline, I think.

The little climber is the same one who went to the hospital last night.

Oh. That makes perfect sense now. I’m sure everyone at the hospital will be on a first name bases with your family soon. 😉
