The Entertaining Stories Primer

I was going to save this post for my one year blog anniversary. I’ve gotten quite a few new followers lately, so I decided to do it today.

Writers need to do something different to stand out from the crowd. I’m not a big believer in posting random chapters of my work. I want this blog to be a friendly and fun place to come. So what’s a writer to do? I could write original bits of small fiction, but others are doing that too.

Here’s what I came up with. I’ll post about my successes, new discoveries, and general writing tips, and I’ll do it as short bits of new fiction. I created the Writing Cabin; a place I go to work on my stories and promotions. I populated it with characters from my stories. The only problem is it’s similar to a long running comic book series, or a soap opera. New readers need a jumping on point.

All of my stories about the writing cabin are posted under the “Muse” category, just in case anyone is game to look at old posts.

Think of this post like the racing forum you get at the county fair. Here’s what you’ll find at the cabin:

The cabin: It’s a large log cabin in a meadow surrounded by forest. The area is a little dicey. There are likely to be herds of mammoth or ice age bison wandering around. I get there in a high tech gyrocopter. There is an elevator into the basement where I can keep my ride away from itchy bison. The basement is full of story elements of every kind.

Lisa: Lisa Burton is the main character in Wild Concept. She is a robot that was built in a concept lab. Since her story is finished she really doesn’t have much to do. She moved into the upstairs bedroom and works as my assistant. She’s a strawberry blonde with a big assed gun.

Lorelei: This is my Muse. She’s Greek (duh), brunette, athletic, and kind of bossy. She shows up whenever she pleases and sometimes visits the real world.

Doubt: This is a raven given to me as a gift by Lorelei. He thinks he’s keeping me honest, but I just think he’s a pain in the ass. He makes a multitude of sounds and occasionally mimics human speech.

Visitors: So far there have been plenty of visitors to the cabin. These include a group of dwarves from a story called The Cock Of The South; Bento, who’s a supporting character in Panama; Faith from Wild Concept who psychoanalyzed me one day; Lefty, the left side of my brain, and more. We even had a bunch of bad guys trying out for a role in one of my stories.

These posts are pretty popular and I intend to keep writing them. I always include asterisks so new readers can catch up, but with so many new followers I wanted to post a primer about the cabin.

It’s fun here. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell the left side of your brain.

This is one of my author friends. If you have met him before and thought of following but did not know who or what he was talking about, this is your opportunity to find out. He’s really quite clever. Introducing C.S. Boyack at Entertaining stories. (He also names his sourdough bread starter).

      • My pleasure. My favorite is Doubt. He flies cross country and comes to visit me too sometimes. or maybe he has cousins. They’ve chased all the swans off my lake in my header pic and some of my jewelry is missing. Don’t they like shiny objects?

      • All members of the jay family like shiny objects.

Maybe I could loan you Doubt. You could blog about him then give him back. Might be fun.

      • I might do that while my husband is reading my MS.

      • Sounds like he flew over your house. Now that my stories are in the wild, I’m terrified that people won’t like them.

      • I was trying to find your contact info, email. I did find your name. I was going to ask you if you had any rules Doubt had to obey. Or is he just running amuck?

Send him on a vacation to Florida. He’ll let me know when he arrives, I’m sure.

I think any time we let others read our stuff it’s like dropping your clothes at the Doctor’s office for the first time. The first time you kissed. That first colonoscopy. They’re pretty much all the same. Funny thing is, we are our own worst critique. Well, maybe not. that one two star review on Amazon was devastating…and she was a friend of a friend. And then there was the one on Goodreads where she told me all of the details of what was wrong with my book and how to rewrite my entire novel over into a trilogy. That sucker was nine paragraphs long. But then…there is also looking at my dashboard to see no books sold for entire months. I’ve had those.

Any way. We enjoy what we do and hope and pray others will find some pleasure in it as well. My husband will read it, and at least he will enjoy telling me what was wrong or right…at least he’s a good sport.

  2. A can attest to the “entertaining” part of these entertaining stories. Craig is a true story weaver to be sure! However, one questions about what you wrote above: I would have thought Bento was recurring enough to have his own billing? Don’t forget that you also provide a lot of real life entertaining tales as well, not to mention tarot and tea leaf readings! Personally, I’m still waiting on the edge of myself for you to get that bread starter back out of the refrigerator! Excellent post, my friend! 😀

  3. Ahhh I see, now I understand what you were doing! Thanks for the explanation, that’s a genius idea.

Generally I don’t really like reading fiction on blogs, be they book extracts or short stories, I don’t say I never read them, but usually if it’s a blogger I follow, I tend to ignore their fiction posts and only read the others – I think it’s because I have such limited time – when I want to read fiction, then I want to choose my own, but with blogging I want to engage in discussions about things, to read some interesting or funny things they have to say, I just don’t feel like reading fiction. To me it’s a bit like when they have a musical guest band or singer on a show to just play one song in an otherwise non-music show (like maybe a chat show or something), I find it annoying, I love music, but it’s not what I’m watching that show for. Does that make sense?

Anyway, I’ve rambled! The actual point I was trying to get to, was that I would be perfectly happy to read fiction in the way you’re talking about here, because then fiction is just the medium to carry the information etc you want to share.

    • That was my goal, and maybe readers might want to know more about one of these characters…and buy a book. That’s why folks from my other stories keep stopping by.

I think it’s working. I’m slowly expanding my footprint.

I’ve had a house full of company this weekend. There hasn’t been a convenient time to update my blog and I feel like I owe you guys something. New followers keep arriving, and this post is designed to help them play along at the writing cabin. I haven’t re blogged it for some time, and just wanted to let everyone know I’m still alive. I’ll try to get something new posted tonight.
